One of the largest chemical companies in the world would like to set up an online shop for its polystyrene products on the Internet, and also have the texts translated into French, Spanish and Italian.
The project is extremely complex. The highly specific technical language requires exact definition of terminology in all three languages. The company's foreign branches have to approve the foreign language versions. The translations are to be delivered as HTML files. There is considerable time pressure, and the customer is still making changes to the files while the translation is already under way.
The project coordinator establishes a schedule and budget, and develops a scheduling plan together with the customer to ensure that a translation meeting the highest quality standards can be carried out in the necessary time span. Product information on polystyrene in the three languages is already obtained in the advisory phase, thus providing the basis for accuracy and consistency in terminology. The structure of the online shop is discussed with the customer.
Once all the files are available (approx. 300 pages per language), a project duration of 5 weeks is fixed. A staggered schedule requires that sections of the translation will be delivered to the customer's foreign branches at weekly intervals for approval. After approval, which has to be carried out within a few hours, the translated files are to receive a final check at LÓPEZ-EBRI® and be sent out to the customer, so that the online shop can be set up in tandem with the translation process.
In conjunction with the language departments, the project coordinator has terminology databases set up on the subject of polystyrene in the 3 languages. After an initial check, the IT specialists at LÓPEZ-EBRI® employ the editor "Documentor" to process the HTML files.
At the same time the responsible department checks the terminology consistency of data sheets, descriptions etc. for the product "polystyrene". The technical terminology is checked separately for the areas of e-commerce and order processing. Questions which the departments may have concerning content are clarified with the customer by the QM representative at LÓPEZ-EBRI®. 8 specialists per language are involved in the process: 1 project coordinator, 2 translators, 1 IT specialist, 2 employees in Production, 1 employee in the QM department, 1 advisor from the chemical industry.
The QM department checks whether all the customer's specifications have been adhered to exactly, and releases the translations for delivery in the individual work stages. Due to good preparation and successful cooperation between all those involved, the project can be completed 4 days earlier than planned: on time and within budget! LÓPEZ-EBRI® uses these days to internally review the project. Key points: Working towards improvements and innovations, passing on possible cost reductions to the customer.
