Translation Memory (TM) systems enable translations to be stored in databases. The TM systems then retrieve the previously translated content for use in subsequent translations.
Any recurring text passages that were translated before are recognised by the system and the translation is automatically inserted.
Translation Memory systems can be an excellent means of improving consistency, in particular with technical translations (the same word is always translated the same way), and cutting your costs. However, the foreign-language content of these systems is only as good as the people who input it (translators, revisers, terminologists); after all, they are the ones who create it, and not the computer.
Translation Memory systems should not be confused with machine translation systems, which automatically generate translations but as yet cannot produce translations of acceptable quality.
